Bitcoin hashrate set to new high, mining difficulty near ATH

Bitcoin’s hashrate hit a new high on the first day of 2022 at 209.39 exahashes per second (EH / s). Over the past 12 months, Bitcoin’s hashrate has increased 47.92% from 141.55 EH / s on January 3, 2021.

Bitcoin hashrate reaches new milestone

The processing power and security of the  network has never been so high, and the network reached an important milestone in the early days of 2022. The BTC network hit 194.95 EH / s not that long ago on December 8, 2021. Additionally, it should be noted that Ethereum has also posted an all-time high of 1 Petahash per second (PH / s).

On December 22nd, 2021, the Ethereum network reached 1.0122 PH / s and today’s metrics shows The ETH hashrate is still 1 PH / s higher on Sunday. On January 3, 2021, Bitcoin’s hashrate was 141.55 EH / s, which is 47.92% lower than today’s hashpower stats.

Mining difficulty near ATH

On June 28, 2021, China’s crackdown on BTC miners caused the hash rate to drop to 69.11 EH / s. Since then, the metric has risen 202.98% as the majority of mining operations are relocated to other countries. At the time of writing, Foundry USA is the largest Bitcoin mining pool with 19.45% global hash power, or 34.79 EH / s. The second largest mining pool in terms of global hashrate is Antpool with 16.91% hashrate or 30.25 EH / s.

There are only 11 known pools mining BTC today, and 3.81% of the global hashrate comes from unknown miners. Miners have faced two increases in Bitcoin mining difficulty in the past two years. On December 11th the level of difficulty was increased by 8.33% and on December 25th by 0.32%. The next change in Bitcoin’s mining difficulty level will bring it close to a record with an all-time high of 25 trillion. Over the next 5 days, the difficulty is expected to increase 2.9% to 24.98 trillion.
