Nearly 180,000 corrupted URLs aim to mine hidden cryptocurrencies, US accounts for 70%

According to a report Recently, Atlas VPN experts documented 177,753 URLs (web addresses) containing malicious cryptocurrency miners between October 2020 and September 2021.

Of these, almost 70% of malicious URLs detected targeted the US market. Germany and Russia were also among the top 3 countries attacked by attackers, at 3.2% and 2.1%, respectively.

Hidden mining steals resources

During this period, Atlas VPN identified approximately 831,000 URLs that turned out to be malicious. Hidden web miners consume significant resources of the central processing unit, which significantly affects the computer’s operation.

Atlas VPN also notes that cyber criminals make money by secretly mining cryptocurrencies on victims’ devices.

Previously, experts reported that users of the Norton 360 antivirus accused the developers of illegally mining cryptocurrencies on their devices. It turns out that antivirus software is often behind the hidden cryptocurrency mining without user’s permission. Therefore, it is very difficult to remove them.

The developers position the built-in miner as passive income for users. In reality, however, the cryptocurrency is stored in the company’s own wallet and the withdrawal fee is 15%.

At the same time, Google Cloud users are also being targeted by hidden miners. According to analysts from the Google Cybersecurity Action Team, almost 90% of Google Cloud account hacks aim to mine hidden cryptocurrencies. Attackers use the cloud infrastructure to mine various cryptocurrencies, including Green Bitcoin – Chia (XCH).

In another development, Youtuber Siraj Raval to explain was able to mine $3,800 ether per month with a Tesla Model. However, other Tesla enthusiasts have questioned the veracity of the claim. Miner Thomas Somers said in an interview with CNBC that the numbers claimed by Siraj Raval are unrealistic.
