The Creator Of Fortnite Collaborates With NASA On A Metaverse Project
U.S space agency NASA and Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite are delivering a “challenge” to game developers. The challenge is to create a Martian metaverse experience that can help prepare for an eventual trip to the red planet.
Creating a Martian Metaverse Experience
According to an official statement which was posted in Herox, a crowdsourcing problem-solving platform, NASA have called for developers to in its building of “Virtual Reality (XR) assets and scenarios for use by NASA in research focused on extravehicular activities on the surface of Mars.”
The challenge aims to provide an additional realistic experience to MarsXR, an already-started metaverse world that includes 400km2 of realistic Mars terrain, with realistic weather conditions and day and night transitions.
The challenge incorporates categories ranging from setting up camp, scientific research, maintenance, and exploration. Winners will be rewarded with a total prize money of $70,000, shared across twenty individual prizes.
Challenge Has Already Gathered Attention
The challenge has already gathered a lot of attention with more than 24 teams and 237 innovators contributing to the construction of the Martian simulation.
The prize is open to anyone aged 18 or older participating as an individual or as a team. Individual competitors and teams may originate from any country, as long as U.S. federal sanctions do not prohibit participation.
