From Mixtapes to NFTs: French Montana on Music and Crypto
French Montana is making a musical transition. The multiplatinum-selling rapper explained that this is because he now controls all of his music rights.
French Montana, who moved to the Bronx from Morocco when he was 13 years old, said that owning the rights to his music allows him to “give people exactly what they’re worth when they come and spend their time and money with you.”
Each NFT unlocks NFT music rights to Montana’s forthcoming album, “Montega.” Rare NFTs in the collection will also provide backstage access to Montana’s global concerts for nearly three years, beginning June 20, 2022. Buyers of super-rare NFTs or those directly related to the Montega music NFT (MTG) will have commercial rights to “Montega,” as well as rights to perform, remix, and resell.
French Montana stated this on CoinDesk TV’s “First Mover” program prior of the launch of the French Family PNP non-fungible token (NFT) collection:
“I found a way to grow closer with my fans,”
The three-time Grammy nominee rapper adds that it is an opportunity for fans to get up close and personal with him, as well as obtain membership in the USM Metaverse, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). The DAO allows users to make money in a variety of industries, including gaming, music, and even virtual land ownership.
Montana began his career in the music industry by distributing mixtapes and DVDs fifteen years ago. The ecosystem has changed dramatically, and he is attempting to keep up.
“When I first started, when I did the DVDs, I felt like the game’s Christopher Columbus,” he explained. “I feel the same way about NFTs.”
French Montana is hoping to capitalize on the NFT trend, which caused consumers to send $44 billion in cryptocurrencies to smart contracts related with NFT marketplaces and collections last year, according to Chainalysis.
Montana said that he waited until he felt ready to add something new to the table before diving into NFTs.
“Only the strong survive at this point,” he stated of NFTs’ prospects.
Nonetheless, this is hardly Montana’s first effort into NFTs. In November, he promoted NFTs associated with his Coke Boys footwear line, which was manufactured by LA Sneaker.
In April, he was one of many bold-faced people promoting the NFT series Bored Bunny, a parody of Bored Apes that many accuse of being a rug pull.
When asked if he is hesitant to invest in celebrity-endorsed enterprises such as the Bored Bunny line, which made a lot of bogus promises to fans before going rogue, Montana responded, “I make honest investments in things that I believe in.”
French Montana cites platforms such as TikTok and Instagram for catapulting musicians into the public, all while democratizing and leveling the playing field in the music industry to some extent.
French Montana now wants to be in charge of his brand. “I’m glad I’m able to capitalize off of my own creative,” he stated, advising other artists to do the same.
“That’s what gave me the leverage to even be here and to come out with this French Family PFP,” he explained.
Montana’s French Family PFP NFT will be available on the USM Metaverse via an airdrop on Monday, June 20. The record, titled “Montega,” is set to be published on June 24.
