The highly anticipated London upgrade from Ethereum is now ready for mainnet activation, having successfully deployed on all three testnets, Ropsten, Goerli and Rinkeby. Once activated, the London Hardfork will introduce Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) on the mainnet, including:
- EIP-1559 – The most anticipated Ethereum improvement proposal that addresses the problem of high gas charges in the ETH network by offering a variable base charge based on network congestion. The basic fee is burned (i.e. it is destroyed by the protocol).
- EIP-3198 – Adds an opcode that gives the Ethereum Virtual Machine access to the basic block charge
- EIP-3529 – Eliminate Gas Refunds for SELFDESTRUCT and Reduce Gas Refunds for SSTORE
- EIP-3541 – Rejection of new smart contracts from 0xEF
- EIP-3554 – Ethereum difficulty bomb delayed to the first week of December 2021
The Ethereum Foundation team paid special attention to the security of the London Upgrade by doubling all code-related bonuses before the upgrade takes place.
“For more information on the upcoming changes to the London upgrade, all security vulnerability awards associated with the London upgrade will be doubled until the upgrade takes place. Examples of issues that qualify for double bounties are consensus issues between customers: Geth, Besu, Nethermind, OpenEthereum, and Erigon. “
