82% Of All Relay Blocks On Ethereum Are Built By Flashbots Alone

After completing The Merge upgrade, Ethereum (ETH) has transitioned to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, making the blockchain energy efficient and secure. However, mining data shows Ethereum’s heavy reliance on Flashbots — a single server — to build blocks, raising concerns about a single point of failure for the ecosystem.

Flashbots is a centralized entity dedicated to transparent and efficient Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) mining that acts as a relay for the distribution of Ethereum blocks.

Data from mevboost.org shows that there are seven active Replays currently distributing at least one block in Ethereum, namely Flashbots, BloXroute Max Profit, BloXroute Ethical, BloXroute Regulated, Blocknative, Eden, and Manifold.

As shown above, 82.12% of all relay blocks were found to be built by Flashbots alone – contributing greatly to Ethereum’s centralization.

A BitMEX blog post highlighted the need to completely re-develop Flashbots or a similar system to minimize unforeseen complications in the post-Consolidation era. However, supporters of Flashbots argue that the system is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that will eventually become decentralized on its own.

Complementing the data regarding Flashbots dominance, an analysis from Santiment indicates that 46.15% of Ethereum’s PoS nodes are controlled by just two addresses.

Since the successful completion of The Merge, the majority of blocks – around 40% or more – have been built by two addresses belonging to Lido and Coinbase.
