What Illustrious Billionaire Bill Gates Thinks About Web3 And Metaverse In 2023?
- In response to the big technology shift question, Bill Gates stated that neither Web3 nor Metaverse but artificial intelligence (AI) was the big one.
- Gates also cautioned against placing too much faith in technological developments such as Metaverse.
On January 12, 2023, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates announced on Twitter that he would live on Reddit with an ask-me-anything session expressing what matters as he heads into 2023, which includes Web3 and Metaverse.
However, the co-founder of Microsoft recently threw cold water on Web3 and Metaverse at the Reddit ask-me-anything session, putting a damper on hopes that these technologies would become the next big thing.
Firstly, an user known as DWright_5 recalled Gates’ famous early-2000s comment about people massively overestimating the internet’s potential in five years yet vastly underestimating its potential in ten years. Following the dot-com bubble, the phrase proved to be prophetic.
Then the user inquired the Microsoft billionaire about the current technology innovation, asking “Is any mammoth technology shift at a similar stage right now? Any tech shift – not necessarily the Internet.”
In response to the inquiry, Gates stated that neither Web3 nor Metaverse but artificial intelligence (AI) was the big one. This comes when Microsoft is pouring billions of dollars into the sector. At the same time, Gates cautioned against placing too much faith in technological developments such as Web3 and Metaverse.

Given his history of anti-crypto statements, Gates’ negative remark comes as no surprise. In 2018, Gates stated that if he could, he would short Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency. He then tempered his approach, taking a more impartial posture. Nonetheless, Gates has chastised Bitcoin for its exorbitant energy consumption.
