Sepolia Testnet Hard Fork Scheduled For February On Ethereum

Key Points:

  • Ethereum developers agreed on Feb. 28 as the target date for pushing the Sepolia test network (testnet) through the Shanghai upgrade, the blockchain’s big upcoming move to allow withdrawals of staked ether (ETH).
  • The last testnet to receive the Shanghai update is Goerli, which will happen once Sepolia has gone through its own round of testing.

The second such network to receive the upgrade is Sepolia, a restricted testnet only for Ethereum developers. The Zhejiang testnet successfully executed its own simulation of staked ETH withdrawals earlier this week. One more test network is scheduled to receive the update, and the Shanghai hard fork is anticipated to occur on the main Ethereum blockchain the following month.

Developers who operate validators on the Sepolia network are not permitted access to the testnet. In contrast, Zhejiang is a public testnet, making it accessible to anyone who wants to experiment releasing staked ETH, including staking providers.

The last testnet to receive the Shanghai update is Goerli, which will happen once Sepolia has gone through its own round of testing. Since Goerli is the largest public Ethereum testnet and the final opportunity for staking providers to confirm that staked ETH withdrawals function before Shanghai goes live on the mainnet, it will be the most anticipated test.

Since going through the Merge in September, which replaced its outdated, energy-intensive proof-of-work (PoW) paradigm with a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus process, Shanghai will be Ethereum’s first hard fork. As a method of aiding in the validation and security of transactions, PoS uses ETH that is “staked” on the blockchain.
