Bitcoin ATMs Will Be Installed in 12 Locations Across Austria by Electronics Retailer MediaMarkt
Bitcoin ATMs Will Be Installed in 12 Locations
According to an article in the local daily Kleine Zeitung, Media-Markt, Europe’s largest electronics retailer, has chosen to install Bitcoin ATMs at twelve of its stores in Austria.
At Kurant vending machines, customers will be able to purchase Bitcoin. Kurant, a Coinfinity spin-off, now has 200 Bitcoin ATMs in Austria, Spain, Greece, and Germany. In 2019, one of Media-Markt’s branches began testing similar capability. Due to high demand, it has decided to extend it.
MediaMarkt was hit by a crippling ransomware assault in November of last year. The hackers demanded a stunning $240 million in Bitcoin at first, but after negotiating with the electronics retailer, they agreed for a $50 million payment. MediaMarkt was unable to accept credit card payments in certain of its businesses as a result of the hack. MediaMarkt is a chain of retailers with over 1,000 locations across Europe.Â
In collaboration with Coinme, Walmart secretly placed 200 Bitcoin ATMs around the United States last year. There are more than 36,806 ATMs in the world, according to CoinATMRadar’s data. The great majority are in the United States, with Europe accounting for only a minor percentage of all bitcoin vending machines.
Last month, the Financial Conduct Authority, the UK’s major financial regulator, announced a ban on Bitcoin ATMs in order to prevent cryptocurrencies from being used to launder money. Crypto vending machine owners are sometimes accused of neglecting illegal behavior.
