Chipotle chain of fast-casual restaurants officially accepts cryptocurrency
Chipotle Mexican Grill, a popular Mexican-style fast-food restaurant chain, officially accepts crypto payments through its Flexa platform.
Flexa is a multi-purpose digital payment gateway mainly for merchants, currently supporting about 98 currencies, including BTC and ETH. Flexa is compatible with hardware at the point of sale (POS) and was born with the aim of reducing costs and payment time for users.
Customers can use this payment gateway to pay for food at any of the nearly 3,000 Chipotle restaurants in the United States. To pay with Flexa, customers need to download the Gemini or SPEDN app.
On April 1 of last year, this American fast food restaurant chain celebrated National Burrito Day by giving away up to $100,000 worth of Bitcoin. The user will have 10 attempts to guess a valid six-digit password. If lucky, participants will win the main prize of $25,000 Bitcoin each.
Chipotle even caught the metaverse trend early when it set up a virtual restaurant on Roblox for Halloween last year. Players can “dress” a Chipotle-themed avatar in the form of a bag of chips in the form of a ghost or a mummy burrito. In that test, the first 100,000 users received free burritos online that could be exchanged for physical products from physical stores.
Chipotle is not the first restaurant to accept cryptocurrency payments. In 2013, Subway was one of the first companies to accept Bitcoin in stores. Pizza Hut in Venezuela is also open for crypto in 2020. Users were able to buy coffee at Starbucks with Bitcoin in May 2019, and it also allows customers to convert between cash and cryptocurrency online. continue on its application and is about to release NFT from the beginning of May this year.
Besides, other fast-food chains are also trying to experiment with blockchain and cryptocurrency in various forms such as Taco Bell, KFC, Chick-fil-A and Carl’s Jr. A few chains have recently filed trademark applications for the NFT.
