The creator of “Bitcoin Toxicity” is dead

Mircea Popescu is a Romanian citizen known for his bitcoin maximalism. Popescu is a relatively mysterious figure in the crypto community who is little known when it comes to just blogging on Trilema. Popescu’s work primarily supports security-oriented open source projects and is dedicated to maintaining the Bitcoin network despite the larger block size requirements. But now this man is said to have drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on June 23.

After his early years of blogging about cryptocurrencies, he founded the Mpex exchange in 2012. Not long after, both he and his foundation were targeted by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Although little is known about his personal and professional endeavors, Popescu’s commitment to open source systems is widely supported and respected. After the open source operating system Open BSD from the 1990s ran into funding problems, Popescu donated $ 20,000 in 2014 to help keep the non-profit foundation behind the software running.

Over the years, Popescu has done a lot of good deeds, but also has a bad reputation and leaves a rather negative image. Just like McAfee, Popescu is notorious for his bitcoin defamation. If McAfee fell into the irony of announcing on TV that he would eat his own penis if Bitcoin price didn’t hit $ 1 million by 2020; Popescu also shocked when he announced that if the BTC block size changed, he would immediately sell 1 million BTC to the market. It is this statement that Popescu made known as the father of “Bitcoin toxicity”. Even Segwit2x, an initiative to double the block size to 2MB, has been rejected, further encouraging the network to use 1MB block sizes.

Although it has never been confirmed, it is speculated that Popescu actually owns or has control over that 1 million BTC. If so, he would be the only Bitcoin millionaire (owner of over 1 million coins). However, after Popescu’s death, the community is concerned that this huge amount of coins could hit the market and cause the price to drop sharply.
