On December 20th, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio announced that some data regarding users and their vehicle sales in China before August 2021 has been leaked and is being illegally sold by third parties on the internet.

Nio said in its statement that it deeply regrets the incident. The company also said it has set up a dedicated hotline and an email address to respond to the data leak.

Furthermore, Nio’s customer service representatives told Chinese media that they will not actively seek customers for compensation but will be responsible for losses incurred.

Nio’s CEO was outraged and said he would not compromise with hackers even at the cost of bankruptcy. However, in a media interview on December 25, Nio CEO blamed Bitcoin for making data extortion particularly easy.

Faced with this statement, Justin Sun, founder of TRON and a senior advisor of Houbi exchange, commented on the incident and said that he and Huobi are ready to assist Nio in finding the hacker soon. Besides, he is also displeased when CEO Nio blames Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general.

The alleged cyberattack against Nio comes at a time when Chinese authorities are asking companies to step up efforts to protect personal information and strengthen corporate accountability.

Automakers are facing increasing threats from data breaches and their impact – affecting customers’ lives and damaging companies’ reputations.
