Axie Infinity crashes with Discord bot, another hack after Ronin crash
Social media attacks have become a new topic in the world of cybercrime, with more and more crypto platforms facing the issue this year. Axie Infinity became the latest of them. The developers have managed to delete the fake message and remove the MEE6 bot from the main server.
In a series of posts on May 18, Axie Infinity announced that the MEE6 bot installed on their main Discord server had been compromised. MEE6 is a popular bot mainly used to automate roles and messages to users of many crypto projects.
According to the investigation, the hacker used MEE6 and added permission to impersonate the admin account, then issued a fraudulent message about minting NFT. The developers were able to remove the compromised MEE6 bot from the main server and delete the fake messages as well.
However, the project’s official Twitter account warned that many users might still see the fake message until they restarted their Discord.
The developers also claimed that the MEE6 compromise is not a new phenomenon and that many projects have encountered similar problems. However, the official MEE6 Discord support channel denied the allegations of a hack, claiming that they had checked with their engineers and found no unusual activity.
However, whatever the case may be, the Axie Infinity investor community seems to be slowly losing “patience” with the project. Because this is the second attack on the platform in just two months since the most shocking hack in crypto history on the Ronin bridge, with a loss of up to $622 million.
More worryingly, the attack on Discord occurred two weeks after Sky Mavis, the developer of Axie Infinity, announced a comprehensive overhaul plan after the Ronin incident. Accordingly, one of the proposed roadmap goals is to apply stricter internal regulations that seem to have not been effectively met so far.
In fact, Discord has been becoming a popular platform targeted by hackers since the beginning of 2022, especially for today’s top valuable NFT projects. In the second quarter of 2021, Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) Discord was hacked, and stolen an NFT worth $69,000.
