Zero Knowledge Rollup

Understanding Zero Knowledge Rollup

A zero knowledge rollup is a layer 2 scaling solution that utilizes zero knowledge cryptography, such as ZK-snarks or ZK-starks, to securely record and validate transactions on the layer 2. This is accomplished by using a cryptographic proof system that is verified by a smart contract on the main underlying blockchain.

One of the main advantages of a zero knowledge rollup is its reliance on a smart contract to validate transaction proofs. This leads to higher transaction throughput and faster finality time compared to Optimistic rollups. Notable examples of production apps running on zero knowledge rollups include the DeversiFi decentralized exchange and the Immutable X NFT exchange.

Zero knowledge rollups are particularly well-suited for custom and specialist apps that are specifically designed for this technology. However, several rollup projects are currently working on releasing zero knowledge rollups that will allow projects to launch their smart contracts on the layer 2 without the need for additional code development.
