The Chinese government continues to crack down on the crypto mining industry by suspending crypto mining operations in another province.

Local news agency Hefei Online reported that authorities in Anhui, a small province in eastern China, have announced a series of measures to address growing electricity needs and the associated power shortages over the next three years.

As part of Anhui’s efforts to limit energy use, the province plans to close down cryptocurrency mining projects and consider new initiatives that require energy use. The local government is also planning to use new methods of building data centers and promoting electricity price reform to optimize energy consumption in the province.

China’s Anhui Province, once known as one of the poorest provinces in China, was only removed from the country’s official poverty list in 2020. According to the report, the province’s power grid consists mainly of coal-fired power plants along with some hydropower projects, wind and solar power plants.

The news comes amid massive regulatory crackdown on crypto mining in China after a similar string of bans took place in other Chinese provinces such as Yunnan and Sichuan, one of the largest hydropower-based mining centers in the country. Authorities in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Qinghai have also ordered mining to be shut down in recent months.
