HBO Documentary Renews Satoshi Nakamoto Identity Speculation

According to data from the prediction market Polymarket on October 7, the crypto community is speculating on two prominent figures, Len Sassaman and Nick Szabo, to be named Nakamoto in the series.

Speculation over Nakamoto’s identity has reached a fever pitch since HBO announced the series, not just because of the show in itself but because of reports that this documentary might finally unmask the originator of the world’s first cryptocurrency.

Per Polymarket data, Szabo presently leads as the most likely candidate, with 24.6% of respondents believing that he could be Nakamoto. Szabo is a well-known name within the crypto space for his early contributions, such as creating smart contracts and referring to BitGold in 1998, a precursor to Bitcoin. Those contributions added to public speculation from the likes of Elon Musk, who once suggested Szabo may be Nakamoto, have kept him at the centre of such discussions.

Odds on Adam Back Skyrocket Due to False Rumors

Back, another famous cryptographer, reached as high as 9.7%, although it later emerged this surge in odds on Adam Back was down to an apparent joke from fellow crypto expert Samson Mow, also featured in the documentary.

The joke over Mow on X sparked rumours that perhaps Adam Back was Nakamoto. Back has denied that one repeatedly as well. Recently, he spoke again about the rumors: “I’m not.” However, the odds on Adam Back are still in the top 3 candidates.

Slated to go live on October 8, the crypto world should pay close attention to who Nakamoto really is. It may well cause turmoil in Bitcoin if some of the coins that have remained unspent in those wallets move.
