Damien Hirst Keeps Burning NFT-linked Artworks
Damien Hirst, one of the UK’s best-known contemporary artists, has set fire to hundreds of artworks as part of a long-running NFT project, with intentions to torch thousands more.
Hirst created hundreds of artworks as part of an experimental art project called The Currency. Hirst produced 10,000 paintings, each with its own NFT. Buyers were eventually offered the option of keeping the NFT or taking possession of the real artwork.
Damien Hirst intended to set fire to the physical artwork for individuals who chose the latter choice.
He kept his word and performed the first burn on a live feed. Hirst said in an Instagram post that the worth of art, whether digital or real, which is difficult to describe at the best of circumstances, will not be lost and will be transferred to the NFT as soon as they are burned.
According to NPR, over 4,800 customers chose to keep their NFTs rather than exchange them for a physical copy of the work. As a result, Damien Hirst has tens of thousands more to burn.
