BNBChain recently announced the launch of opBNB, a Layer 2 scaling solution for the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) powered by the Optimism opStack. The block gas limit is 100M gas and is primarily designed for gaming, decentralized exchanges, daily use, and digital collectibles. The ideal scenario is having opBNB serve as a dedicated high-performance ledger for gaming applications, with BSC as a secure settlement layer.
The opBNB network works by offloading transaction processing and resource usage from the BSC while still posting data to the underlying mainnet. Users interact with the network by depositing funds from BSC and using applications and contracts on opBNB. Sequencers then aggregate transactions, compute state transitions and submit them to the rollup contract on BSC. Provers generate cryptographic proofs that prove the validity of these state transitions, and Verifiers check the proofs to verify the opBNB state is correct.
At its core, opBNB allows users to deposit and withdraw funds, use smart contracts, and view network data with high throughput and low fees. By leveraging Layer 2, opBNB is able to scale beyond the constraints of the BSC and provide an improved experience for users. The TPS of the opBNB network is around 4761, which is much faster than the native transfer on BSC.
This technology is particularly important for gamers who demand highly responsive experiences. Any noticeable delays between a player’s inputs or actions and the game’s responses can seriously hamper enjoyment and immersion. Slow transaction times, lag, or choppy performance are huge deterrents for gamers looking to engage with a digital experience deeply.
For blockchain-based games, this highlights the importance of fast transaction speeds and throughput to enable a seamless user experience. Gamers expect assets, currencies, and other in-game items to be transferred or updated instantly – any delays due to issues with the underlying blockchain network could make the game unplayable.
