Key Points:

  • Ethereum core developers discussed the Shanghai upgrade public testnet release schedule and the upgrade progress at the February 2 conference.
  • Ethereum’s Shanghai upgrade will go live on the Zhejiang testnet on February 7.
  • If the test is successful, on February 9, the upgrade will go live on the Sepolia testnet.

On February 2, Ethereum developers gathered for Call #154 of All Core Developers Execution (ACDE). Hosted by Tim Beiko of the Ethereum Foundation, the ACDE calls are one of two biweekly meetings where Ethereum developers discuss and coordinate changes to Ethereum’s implementation layer.

According to the meeting minutes, the Zhejiang Ethereum public withdrawal testnet was launched on February 1. Anyone can claim testnet ETH from the faucet and start their validator on the operated network by the Ethereum Foundation.

Due to a possible configuration issue with the CL software client, the test network has difficulty processing newly committed ETH deposits.

Assuming this issue is resolved within the next few days, the developers plan to activate the Shanghai upgrade on the Zhejiang testnet on February 7.

Suppose the Shanghai upgrade goes smoothly on the Zhejiang testnet. In that case, the developers will decide the activation date during the ACDC conference call on February 9 to release the upgrade on the Sepolia testnet.

The developers plan to release the Shanghai upgrade on the Ethereum Goerli testnet in late February or early March. After the transition is successful, it will move to the mainnet.

Ethereum core developers also spend most of their time discussing issues related to EIP-4844, including gas pricing, transaction validation rules, transaction pool testing, and blob/block coupling.

The Shanghai upgrade is the most anticipated event of Ethereum soon because of its outstanding improvements. For example, fundamental changes will enhance the Ethereum virtual machine, further expanding its functions. In particular, users can withdraw their staked ETH capitalized on Beacon Chain.
